Gandalf to Denethor

Perhaps my one single favorite quote from The Lord of the Rings, by JRR Tolkien, Gandalf affirming the but relative importance of Gondor to the Steward of Gondor himself, Lord Denethor. It is a very important part of Tolkien's thought, to be highlighted, that abstract conceptions such as honour, realms or ranks are never shown above the defence of concrete life.

"The rule of no realm is mine, neither of Gondor nor any other, great or small. But all worthy things that are in peril as the world now stands, those are my care. And for my part, I shall not wholly fail of my task, though Gondor should perish, if anything passes through this night that can still grow fair or bear fruit and flower again in days to come. Grand remerciement à mon ami d'outre-tombe Charles Dickens qui a toujours su exprimer, avec ses mots précautionneusement pesés et savamment choisis, la teneur exacte de la réalité, suspendue entre l'illusion de nos perceptions et le fantasme de nos conceptions.

La chandelle qu'il a tenue réchauffe encore mon quotidien blafard. Puisse-t-elle faire flamme puis incendie, quand le vent soufflera fort pour éteindre la dernière étincelle d'humanité.

Listening to the theme of "Chariots of Fire" by Vangelis and it's still the same thrill, more than twenty years after I first heard it.


Feeling like... something great is being achieved, something that one can be proud of, something worth it. Great art: though I didn't even see the movie so far, I can imagine being amidst the action.
